Description

Termite proofing (or anti-termite treatment) is a set of chemical and physical barriers applied to a building to prevent termites from attacking wooden structures and foundations. It ensures structural integrity and protects properties from costly damage. Effective termite proofing is generally split into two phases and utilizes multiple specialized methods: Pre-Construction (During Building): This is the most effective method, as it treats the foundation before the structure is finished. Soil Treatment: The soil surrounding and under the foundation is drenched with termiticides (chemical liquids) to create a protective barrier against subterranean termites. Physical Barriers: Installing stainless steel mesh or metal termite shields around plumbing and concrete foundations to physically block termites from entering. Wood Treatment: Applying specialized chemicals directly to the wooden framing and support beams before installation. Post-Construction (For Existing Buildings): Used for homes or offices that are already built, this process focuses on eliminating existing colonies and setting up preventative barriers. Drill and Fill: Professionals drill small holes at regular intervals (usually 1-foot apart) around the floor-wall junctions and inject liquid termiticide under pressure. These holes are then sealed with cement. Termite Baiting: Burying toxic bait stations in the soil around the house perimeter. Termites eat the bait and share it with the colony, eventually eliminating the entire nest. Wood Spraying/Foaming: Treating existing infested wood with termiticide foams or chemical injections. Best Practices & Prevention: Moisture Control: Termites thrive in damp areas. Ensure proper drainage around your building and fix any leaking pipes to reduce their appeal. Material Selection: When renovating or building, use naturally termite-resistant woods (like Cedar, or locally in Pakistan, Sheesham and Deodar).
